The Beatles

Biography

The Beatles were a rock group from Liverpool, active from 1960, whose members were John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. Lennon and McCartney led the songwriting, and the band grew out of Lennon's earlier Quarrymen, playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg. Manager Brian Epstein and producer George Martin helped them sign with EMI, and their 1962 single Love Me Do became a first hit. Beatlemania followed, making them international stars by 1964 and central to the British Invasion of the American pop market. Their screen work began with A Hard Day's Night (1964) and continued with Help! (1965). After retiring from live shows in 1966, they recorded more ambitious albums, including Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Abbey Road. Let It Be (1970), a documentary, earned an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. The group broke up in 1970.
