Plot summary
John Lennon's life is told in his own voice, drawn from more than a hundred hours of interviews and archive footage from Yoko Ono's personal collection. Yoko Ono, his second wife, and Cynthia Lennon, his first, appear, with his sons Julian and Sean, producer George Martin and May Pang, their personal assistant. Lennon speaks of his early childhood with his aunt Mimi and of his mother Julia, and remembers meeting Paul McCartney and starting the Beatles with George Harrison and Ringo Starr. He and Cynthia recall how the group left him little time to help raise Julian.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Imagine: John Lennon (1988)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The documentary put out two Lennon recordings nobody had heard before: an acoustic demo of "Real Love" he taped in 1979, and a rehearsal take of "Imagine" from mid-1971 made before the final version was captured.
- Yoko Ono opened the family's own film and videotape archive to director Andrew Solt, who with newsreel material ended up sifting roughly 230 hours of footage. Producer David L. Wolper could only advise, having had heart bypass surgery.
- Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr all refused to be interviewed, but Solt said they approved of the result: McCartney sang along to John's solo songs at a screening, while Starr was left very broken up by it.
