Plot summary
Under the sea lies Pepperland, where music is loved and where Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band lives. Beyond its high blue mountains dwell the Blue Meanies, who hate music, and they launch a surprise attack. A glass globe imprisons the band, apples bonk the residents into stillness, and the whole countryside is drained of color. In the last minutes before the Lord High Mayor is bonked, he sends Young Fred away to find help. Fred takes the Yellow Submarine up to Liverpool, follows a dejected Ringo to The Pier, and explains Pepperland's plight. Ringo gathers John, George and Paul, and the four set off with Fred in the submarine.

- Peter Batten provided the voice of George for about the first half of the film, but before he finished recording he was discovered to be a deserter from the British Army of the Rhine in West Germany and was arrested; Angelis, the voice of Ringo and the Chief Blue Meanie, completed the part.
- Coates acknowledges in the commentary that the “Are you Bluish? You don't look Bluish” joke is a pun on the then-contemporary expression “You don't look Jewish”, a reference to how most villains in movies were played by Jewish actors, though it was not intended to be derogatory.
- Background supervisor Millicent McMillan recalls that the Blue Meanies were originally supposed to be red, or even purple, and that the colors only changed when Heinz Edelmann's assistant altered them by accident.
- Production supervisor John Coates states that many of the film's lines were written by the Liverpudlian poet Roger McGough, who at that time was married to a former girlfriend of both Lennon and McCartney, though he received no credit in the film.
- In May 2010 Disney shuttered Zemeckis' digital film studio ImageMovers Digital after the poor box-office performance of A Christmas Carol, and on 14 March 2011 it abandoned the remake, citing the catastrophic opening weekend results of Simon Wells' Mars Needs Moms.
- The professional wrestler known as the Blue Meanie derived both his name and his persona from the villains of the film.
