Eric Clapton

Biography

Eric Clapton is an English guitarist, singer and songwriter whose blues-based playing made him one of rock's most influential figures. Born in Ripley, Surrey, he joined the Yardbirds in 1963 and later played with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. In 1966 he formed the power trio Cream with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce, known for extended improvisations and hits such as Sunshine of Your Love and White Room. After Cream broke up in 1968, he led Derek and the Dominos, whose album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs included Layla. His solo career brought hits including a 1974 cover of I Shot the Sheriff, the album Slowhand (1977) and August (1986). He has won 18 Grammy Awards, a Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music and a CBE, and is the only artist inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times. He also appeared in concert films including Live Aid (1985) and Concert for George (2003).

  1. About the name

Giorgio Gomelsky gave Clapton the nickname "Slowhand." It was a pun on the "slow handclap" English audiences did while Clapton stayed on stage to replace a broken guitar string.

  2. A first

Clapton is the only person inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times. He was honored once on his own and separately with the Yardbirds and with Cream.

  3. A role that slipped away

Clapton left the Yardbirds and suggested Jimmy Page as his replacement. Page turned the offer down because he was loyal to Clapton, and instead put Jeff Beck forward.

  4. Early training

In 1961, Clapton left Hollyfield School in Surbiton and went on to study at the Kingston College of Art. Music, not art, stayed his focus, and he was thrown out when that academic year ended.

  5. Behind the award

For the score of Edge of Darkness, a 1985 BBC television thriller series, Clapton worked with Michael Kamen, and their collaboration earned Clapton a British Academy Television Award.
