Plot summary
While repairing a pipe at the home of Mr. Ames in London in 1938, Cluny Brown strikes up a friendship with Adam Belinski. At a party at that house, Betty Cream, who thinks only of herself, is pursued by Andrew Carmel and John Frewen; she finds Belinski asleep, and the men recognize him as a well-known anti-Nazi author and professor. Andrew Carmel invites him to stay at the Carmel family home outside London. Cluny's uncle and guardian disapproves of her unladylike behavior and arranges for her to become the parlor maid at that same household, presided over by Sir Henry and Lady Carmel. The housekeeper Mrs. Maile and the butler Mr. Syrette treat her with contempt, and at dinner she is startled to see Belinski.
