Plot summary
Mike Harper's work for a textiles and fashions company takes him and his wife Janet from America to England. Mike wants a flat in the center of London, but Janet chooses a rural estate thirty miles out in Kent, so he commutes by train and often stays at a company flat in the city rather than coming home. Janet feels lonely and neglected, and she comes to fear that Mike and his assistant, Claire Hackett, are more than colleagues. Their landlady, Vanessa Courtwright, urges Janet to answer in kind with an affair of her own, even a make-believe one. Paul Bellari, an Italian antiques dealer, arrives to decorate the house.
