Morton Lowry
Biography
Morton Lowry was a British actor who began on the London stage in the 1930s, billed as Edward Lowater and appearing in revues at the Alhambra, the London Astoria and the Garrick, often as part of a chorus line. He took the name Morton Lowry for his screen break as Donnie in The Dawn Patrol (1938) and went on to make more than 25 films. His best known roles came in How Green Was My Valley (1941), which drew ten Academy Award nominations, and in the Sherlock Holmes series with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. He played John Stapleton in the 1939 film The Hound of the Baskervilles and, in Pursuit to Algiers (1945), the steward Sanford. He also appeared in The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945). His film work dwindled after 1947, and in the 1950s he moved into British television, including The Four Just Men and The Adventures of Robin Hood. He died in 1987.
