Monty Woolley
Biography
Monty Woolley was an American film and theater actor who found stardom at 50. Born in Manhattan, New York City, in 1888, he died in 1963. He directed on Broadway from 1929 before starting his acting career there in 1936. His 1939 role in the Kaufman and Hart comedy The Man Who Came to Dinner typecast him as a wasp-tongued sophisticate. He reprised it in the 1941 film The Man Who Came to Dinner. His films also included Night and Day (1946), The Bishop's Wife (1947), and As Young as You Feel (1951). He was nominated for Academy Awards for The Pied Piper and Since You Went Away and won a National Board of Review award for The Pied Piper. He starred in the radio series The Magnificent Montague from 1950 to 1951 and appeared on television, including a 1954 adaptation of The Man Who Came to Dinner. He received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1960.

Big break

Woolley became an assistant professor of English and a drama coach at Yale. His students there included Thornton Wilder and Stephen Vincent Benet.
