Biography

Margaret Dumont was an American stage and screen actress who became the Marx Brothers' comic foil. Born Daisy Juliette Baker in Brooklyn, she studied opera and acting as a teenager and performed in the United States and Europe. She made her stage debut in Sleeping Beauty and the Beast in Philadelphia. In 1925 Sam H. Harris recommended her to the Marx Brothers for their Broadway show The Cocoanuts, and she portrayed wealthy society widows in their films, among them The Cocoanuts (1929), Animal Crackers (1930), Duck Soup (1933), A Night at the Opera (1935), A Day at the Races (1937), and The Big Store (1941). Her work in A Day at the Races brought a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress. She also appeared with W.C. Fields and Laurel and Hardy, and her final film role was in What a Way to Go! (1964). She died in 1965.
