Marie Wilson
Biography
Marie Wilson was an American actress who worked in radio, film, and television, remembered for playing the scatterbrained Irma Peterson. Born in Anaheim, California, she entered pictures in 1934 with a small part in Down to Their Last Yacht and soon appeared in features such as Satan Met a Lady (1936). A stint at Harold Lloyd's Beverly Hills theater helped her win a role in Boy Meets Girl in 1938. She originated Irma on the radio comedy My Friend Irma, which aired from 1947 to 1954, then brought the character to the screen in My Friend Irma (1949) and its 1950 sequel, and to a television series that ran from 1952 to 1954. Later films included The Story of Mankind (1957) and Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation (1962), her last feature. The Hollywood Walk of Fame has three stars honoring her work in radio, television, and movies.

A first
A 35-foot, two-ton sculpture outside a hosiery plant in West Los Angeles used Wilson's left leg as its model. DuPont commissioned the plaster leg to promote its new nylons, and Wilson was hoisted thigh-level at the unveiling on August 6, 1949.
First role
Wilson started her Hollywood career as a ship passenger in the 1934 film Down to Their Last Yacht. She later played Mary Quite Contrary in Babes in Toyland.
Getting ready for a role
Wilson feared the radio microphone, yet she took the part of the scatterbrained Irma Peterson in the comedy My Friend Irma. Her run on that radio show lasted from April 11, 1947, to August 23, 1954.
