Plot summary

Tired of auditions, the vaudeville actress Molly Barry decides to try domestic service and applies for a job as housekeeper to John Graham, an upper class gentleman in 1937 London. Her fellow players Lily and Julia hear the news, and her ex-roommate Kitty Goode, lately married into the peerage, agrees to pose as her reference. Graham's butler, Peabody, who left the stage himself, does not want a second performer on the staff. Molly gets him drunk at a pub, brings him home to the Graham house and presents herself to Graham as the new housekeeper. Graham's old friend Jamie McDougall presses him to stand for Parliament, but Graham hesitates, remembering the scandal of his wife's departure with another man, which ended his career.
