Rayford Barnes
Biography
Rayford Barnes was an American character actor who appeared in films and television, often in westerns. Born in Whitesboro, Texas, he studied journalism at the University of Texas, acted in university and little theater productions, and later performed at the Pasadena Community Playhouse. He worked as a radio disc jockey before joining Actors Equity in 1950, and acting on stage in repertory productions such as Three's a Family and Hasty Heart. His film credits included Hondo (1953), The Burning Hills (1956), Fort Massacre (1958), The Wild Bunch (1969), The Hunting Party (1971), and Cahill U.S. Marshal (1973). On television he was especially known for playing Ike Clanton on The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, and he appeared in many series before his final role on ER in 1996. He died in 2000.

During World War II, Barnes served 4 1/2 years in the Navy, and his work there was as a navigator.

Once his military service ended, Barnes took a job as a stagehand at three theaters located in the San Francisco area, and there he gained a healthy respect for the items actors rely on for support.
First role
Barnes joined Actors Equity in 1950. That same year he started acting in Repertory Theater stage productions, among them Three's a Family and Hasty Heart.
