Plot summary
Joe Maybe robs a bank and flees. On the road he watches Marshal Jim Noonan, who is hunting him, fall to his death from a cliff. Joe rides the marshal's horse into a town, where the people take him for Noonan. He decides to keep up the pretense and wear the badge himself. Judge Kyle, the local law enforcer, grows suspicious of him. When the riverboat brings Tessa Milotte, a woman who knows Joe, he tells the judge that she is his wife. Tessa plays along with the story.
