Plot summary
Tom Early comes back to a Wyoming town he left years earlier. He lived there once with his wife and their son, and now the neighbors want nothing to do with him. At the general store, the owner takes offense, deciding that the clerk Jo is flirting with the newcomer. Early rides out to his old ranch, where he finds his wife's grave and his son, Tom Jr., seventeen and angry that his father went away. Jo hires on as housekeeper at the ranch, and she turns down Tom Jr.'s advances, which only feeds his grudge. At church, the store owner sets the preacher's congregation against Early and Jo, insinuating that they are living in sin. The cattleman Grimsell means to drive his herd through the town.

- Stewart Granger was assigned to star in Gun Glory near the end of his MGM contract, and he believed the studio gave him this low-budget Western to punish him for not renewing; Robert Horton had originally been announced as the star.
- Burl Ives was to play the preacher in Gun Glory but had to withdraw and was replaced by Chill Wills, yet the music Ives had recorded for the film was kept in the finished production.
- Accounts of Gun Glory's source conflict: one credits an original story by Cyril Hume, another the novel Man of the West by Philip Yordan, which Ben Maddow said he wrote under Yordan's name; Maddow also claimed to have written the script.
