John Mitchum

Biography

John Mitchum was an American actor whose film and television career ran from the 1940s to the 1970s, and early on he was billed as Jack Mitchum. He was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and his older brother was the actor Robert Mitchum, whom he sometimes supported on screen. After beginning with unbilled bits and extra work, he graduated to character roles. His best-known part was Inspector Frank DiGiorgio, a friendly, food-loving policeman in the first three Dirty Harry pictures: Dirty Harry (1971), Magnum Force (1973) and The Enforcer (1976), where the character was killed. On television he played Trooper Hoffenmueller in eleven episodes of F Troop from 1965 to 1967 and appeared as Hot Dog Harrigan in a 1967 Batman episode. He also wrote, sang and played guitar, and John Wayne used his piece America, Why I Love Her in a book and album of that name.

  1. Behind the camera

Mitchum composed "America, Why I Love Her," and John Wayne put it in his book and album with that title. A short film narrated by Wayne ran at sign-off on many TV stations, and Wayne is often wrongly credited as the composer.
