Plot summary
In Los Angeles, a trade union lawyer named Walter Deaney shoots and kills a burglar at his house. Detective Mitchell thinks the death may involve more than self-defense, but Chief Albert Pallin says Deaney is being investigated by federal authorities. To redirect Mitchell, the chief sends him to conduct surveillance on James Arthur Cummins, a wealthy businessman with organized-crime ties who deals in stolen goods. Mitchell stays interested in Deaney until Cummins learns that Salvatore Mistretta, the cousin of mob figure Tony Gallano, plans to bring heroin from Mexico without permission. Separately, a call girl named Greta turns up at Mitchell's apartment. Mitchell is known for disregarding orders.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about "Mitchell"! (1975)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- According to the Mystery Science Theater 3000 Amazing Colossal Episode Guide, the show's cast heard that Joe Don Baker was furious over their mocking of Mitchell and threatened physical violence against any cast or crew member he met, yet they later went on to mock his film Final Justice anyway.
- For a 1980 television broadcast, an edited Mitchell had most of its violence and all of its nudity and profanity removed, and several scenes were shot twice so the tamer takes could be used on television.
SPOILER
The 1993 Mystery Science Theater 3000 version of Mitchell was trimmed by several minutes, cutting the scene in which Mitchell kills John Saxon's character during a dune buggy chase, so he vanishes mid-film with only a radio voiceover noting his death.
