Plot summary
Dr. Tom Merrinoe's ten-year-old son Timmie wants a playmate and has little else to occupy him. The doctor takes the boy to the research laboratory where he works, and a supercomputer there hypnotizes Timmie and sharpens his mind. Timmie asks about Robby and learns that Dr. Greenhill, once head of the institute, claimed to have built a time machine, visited a spaceport in the Chicago of the year 2309, and returned with a robot and a photograph dated March 16, 2309. Greenhill had taken the robot apart and could not put him back together, and Timmie rebuilds him. Robby then passes to the supercomputer, and when Timmie wishes to play unobserved, Robby makes him invisible.

- Director Herman Hoffman recalled that Frankie Darro was too drunk one day to stay upright inside the Robby the Robot suit; when Darro fell and damaged the expensive costume, producer Nicholas Nayfack was inconsolable while shooting was delayed for repairs.
- Richard Eyer, who played Timmie, recalled that there were two versions of Robby the Robot, one plugged into a power source and one battery-powered, and that when Robby toppled and the actor inside was hurt, Eyer was hurried out of earshot to shield him from the adult language.
- Robby the Robot's film career ended with The Invisible Boy, but the robot went on to appear frequently on television, in shows such as The Twilight Zone and Lost in Space.
