Plot summary
In August 1879, an Apache ambush in New Mexico Territory kills the commanding officer of a cavalry column, leaving only a handful of troopers alive. Sergeant Vinson takes charge and leads the survivors toward Fort Crain, about a hundred miles away. Vinson holds the Apaches responsible for the deaths of his wife and children, and that hatred drives the decisions he makes for the men under him, among them Travis, McGurney, Pendleton and Schwabacker. Pawnee, an Indian scout, rides with the column. The journey wears the troopers down, and Vinson's orders test what is left of their will to go on.
