Plot summary
Terry Doolittle is a computer operator at First National Bank in New York City, where she spends her shifts trading messages with people in other countries and offering them advice. A stranger reaches her late one night under the name Jumping Jack Flash. He says he belongs to British intelligence, is stuck in Eastern Europe, and has the KGB after him. His own superiors cannot be reached. Terry guesses the password protecting his messages, drawn from a shared liking for the Rolling Stones, and he then asks her to carry a coded note to a department at the British consulate. There a staff member, Jeremy Talbot, maintains that the department does not exist.

- Comedian Sam Kinison, who was dating director Penny Marshall at the time, was offered the role of Jack, but Whoopi Goldberg nixed the deal, causing Marshall and Kinison to end their relationship and starting a bitter feud between Kinison and Goldberg.
- After just ten days of filming in New York City, production was shut down and moved to Hollywood over creative differences between the studio and director Howard Zieff, who left the project, as did producer Marvin Worth.
- The production was problematic from the start: the film was originally conceived as a vehicle for Shelley Long, and the script was troubled and often rewritten on the set.
- The soundtrack carries two versions of "Jumpin' Jack Flash": the Rolling Stones original and an Aretha Franklin cover over the end credits. Franklin's version was left off the film's soundtrack album and put out as a single instead.
