Plot summary
Petey Brown is a lounge singer in New York City, homesick for her two sisters and her brother on the West Coast. She visits them in Los Angeles and takes a job at a Long Beach nightclub run by Nicky Toresca, where her sister Sally works. Toresca makes passes at her, and she holds him off. Her two sisters, her brother, and their next-door neighbor all have troubles, and she steps in to help. Then she meets San Thomas, a once-great jazz pianist who is down and out and never got over an old divorce. She falls in love with him.
