Plot summary
Rio and José Esqueda were raised as stepbrothers. Esqueda is a Mexican bandit who resents the settlers in the Brownsville, Texas region, on the border, and he leads raids against them. Their homes are under threat of fire, and the ranch house King Cameron built for his wife, Cordelia, already lies burned. Cameron is one of the newcomers to that country. Rio is a Mexican outlaw raised like a brother to Esqueda, and at the start he rides with him, though the question of driving the settlers out divides the two men. Cordelia, Cameron's wife, does not trust Rio.
