Biography

Dorothy Malone was an American actress who started making films in 1943, initially in small parts and B movies after being signed by RKO. Howard Hawks cast her in The Big Sleep (1946), which first brought her attention. She later moved to Warner Bros. and spent years in Westerns and second leads before changing her look and co-starring in Written on the Wind (1956), winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress as a Texas oil baron's daughter. A leading part in Battle Cry (1955) had already helped her career, and she went on to appear in Man of a Thousand Faces (1957), The Tarnished Angels (1957), Warlock (1959), The Last Voyage (1960), and The Last Sunset (1961). From 1964 to 1968 she played Constance MacKenzie on Peyton Place. Her later films included Winter Kills (1979), Good Luck, Miss Wyckoff (1979), and The Day Time Ended (1980); her last screen appearance was in Basic Instinct (1992).

Dorothy Malone was cast in The Big Sleep after Howard Hawks noticed her, and her scene as a bookstore clerk with Humphrey Bogart became a standout moment in the film.
About the name
Malone's professional surname was changed from Maloney to Malone by Warner Bros., which also gave her a raise and placed her picture in the newspaper.
First role
Malone's first lead role came in Two Guys from Texas (1948), opposite Morgan and Jack Carson. In her words, the film set her onscreen persona as "the all-American girl."
