Plot summary
Clarence Day Sr. presides over a household of four sons in 1883 New York, and expects at home the obedience he commands at his office. Vinnie, his wife, is the one who truly runs the house. Her cousin Cora Cartwright and Mary Skinner are guests for a week, though Clarence dislikes visitors. Rev. Dr. Lloyd comes asking for money toward a new church, and Clarence gives little. Dining at Delmonico's, Mary calls herself a Methodist, and Clarence, an Episcopalian, admits he has never been baptized. Vinnie presses him to be baptized, but he refuses, sure God will let him in. Meanwhile Clarence Jr. courts Mary, and John takes a job selling patent medicine.

- The Motion Picture Production Code forced two dialogue changes from the play: the final line, "I'm going to be baptized, dammit!", had its last word cut, and Clarence Day's frequent "Oh, God!" became "Oh, gad!".
- A clerical error meant Life with Father was never renewed for copyright, so it entered the public domain in 1975; Warner Bros. or United Artists kept theatrical and music rights, but others released non-theatrical versions.
