Biography

Alexis Smith was an American actress and singer who, after growing up in Los Angeles, was signed by Warner Bros. in 1940 after a talent scout saw her in a Los Angeles City College production. Her first credited film role came in Dive Bomber (1941), where she was Errol Flynn's female lead, after a string of uncredited bit parts. She starred in major Warner Bros. films during the 1940s, including Gentleman Jim (1942) with Flynn, The Constant Nymph (1943), The Horn Blows at Midnight (1945) with Jack Benny, Conflict (1945) with Humphrey Bogart, and The Two Mrs. Carrolls (1947). After leaving the studio she made The Turning Point (1952), Split Second (1953), The Sleeping Tiger (1954) and The Young Philadelphians (1959). On Broadway she won a Tony Award in 1972 for Follies. Her later films included The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (1976), Tough Guys (1986) and The Age of Innocence (1993).

First role
Smith first performed professionally as a ballet dancer at the Hollywood Bowl. A Warner Bros. talent scout spotted her in 1940 at Los Angeles City College, where she was acting in a school production.
First role
Smith's first credited screen role was the female lead opposite Errol Flynn in Dive Bomber (1941), a decorative part in a very successful film that led Warners to build her up as a star.
A role that slipped away
After she turned down a loan to Universal for a part in Shoplifter (1950), Smith was released from her Warner Bros. contract in October 1949. Andrea King took her place.
Behind the award
For playing Phyllis Rogers Stone in Hal Prince's Broadway staging of Follies, Alexis Smith drew praise for her singing and dancing, and the role served as her long-awaited Broadway debut. Her performance brought her the 1972 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
A first
At 54, Smith made a big-screen comeback with top billing in Jacqueline Susann's Once Is Not Enough, a 1975 film in which she appeared opposite Kirk Douglas.
Beyond film
Smith played the madam in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas on a tour lasting over a year, which included a seven-month run in Los Angeles.
