Biography

Jonny Lee Miller is an English actor who began on British television as a child and made his name in the mid-1990s as Dade Murphy in Hackers (1995) and Sick Boy in Trainspotting (1996). Born in Kingston upon Thames and raised in south-west London, he was inspired to act by his parents, both theater actors, and left school at sixteen to pursue the work. He won critical recognition for Afterglow (1997), Mansfield Park (1999), Mindhunters (2004), The Flying Scotsman (2006), Endgame (2009), and T2 Trainspotting (2017), and was nominated for a London Film Critics' Circle award for playing cyclist Graeme Obree in The Flying Scotsman. He also appeared on stage in After Miss Julie and won an Olivier Award for Best Actor for Frankenstein. He headlined the television series Eli Stone and Elementary, played Jordan Chase in Dexter, and appeared as John Major in The Crown.

    Miller was suggested for the role of Sick Boy in Trainspotting by Ewan McGregor, and his Scottish accent in the film was convincing enough that some people wrongly believed he was Scottish.

    Miller met fellow actor Jude Law when he joined the National Youth Music Theatre. He took his GCSEs and left school at 16 to pursue an acting career.

  6. Behind the camera

    Miller created and ran the production company Natural Nylon with his friend Jude Law in 1997; the company folded in 2003.
