Plot summary
In 1381, after the Black Death has killed half the population, England is governed by the council of 14-year-old Richard II, who is troubled by nightmares of demon mobs. The council raises taxes on the peasantry, demanding more revenue. Ploughman, who survived the plague but lost his wife and two children, arrives to pay his annual taxes. When the collector insists on death taxes again because he lacks proof of their deaths, and after soldiers forcibly examine young women, Ploughman attacks the collector and kills a soldier trying to arrest him. The act inspires uprisings across England, led by Ploughman, Wat Tyler, and John Ball, an egalitarian priest freed from prison. The rebels decide to march on London to petition the king, believing him just but held hostage by his council.

- Three weeks before its US release, Focus Features retitled the film The Uprising: The Rise of Robin Hood and released a trailer showing Andrew Garfield's character in green, wearing a mask and wielding a bow, implying he was Robin Hood.
- UK distributor Entertainment Film Distributors publicly contradicted the US campaign, saying The Uprising is a historical epic about the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, not Robin Hood, and that Robin Hood marketing material was not issued or approved by it.
- Matthew McConaughey was set to replace Benedict Cumberbatch as the film's lead, but by May 2025 McConaughey had departed and Andrew Garfield was in negotiations to take on the role.
