Plot summary
Remmy and her parents are refugees from Earth who have settled on a remote Martian farm. Their peace is shattered when strangers appear in the hills beyond their property and attack the outpost. During the struggle, Remmy's father is killed. One of the attackers, Jerry, survives and demands that Ilsa and her daughter Remmy give him thirty days to prove himself. He tries to become part of the household, but Remmy remains wary of him. She finds a pet-like robot named Steve in a storage unit and spends much of her time with it as she struggles to adapt to Jerry's presence.
