Plot summary
In the late 1980s, President P.W. Botha is losing his grip on power in South Africa. The African National Congress has taken up armed struggle against apartheid, and the country is sliding toward insurrection. Consolidated Gold Fields, a British mining concern with holdings in South Africa, would rather see a stable country, so it turns to Michael Young, its head of public affairs, and asks him to bring the two camps together in secret. Young assembles a team for talks at a country house in Somerset, England, and puts his trust in the ANC's Thabo Mbeki and Willie Esterhuyse, an Afrikaner professor of philosophy at Stellenbosch University.
