Plot summary
On a rural Georgia plantation run in the style of the 1800s, Alice is held with other domestic servants and dreams of escape. Paul Bennett owns the place, and she has spent her life within its bounds and has never seen beyond its tree line. After a violent clash with him she flees through the neighboring woods, and the highway she comes out on is unlike anything she has ever seen. A truck driver named Frank finds her there and helps her adjust to what she finds, including the year: it is 1973, and she has been misled about the time she lives in.
