Plot summary
At eleven, Dade Murphy crashed 1,507 computer systems and was barred from touching computers or telephones until he turned eighteen. On that birthday he is in New York City with his mother, and the ban is lifted. His hack into a local TV station is countered by a rival calling herself Acid Burn. At school he joins a crew of hackers: Ramon Sanchez, Emmanuel Goldstein, Paul Cook, Joey Pardella, the youngest, and Kate Libby, whose handle is Acid Burn. Joey breaks into the Gibson, a supercomputer at the Ellingson Mineral Corporation, and downloads a file as proof, but his mother disconnects his computer, leaving him a fragment. The intrusion is reported, the Secret Service is enlisted to recover the file, and Joey is arrested.

- According to Fisher Stevens, Quentin Tarantino was considered for the role of villain The Plague in the 1995 film Hackers.
- MGM/UA's promotional website for Hackers was allegedly hacked by a group calling itself the Internet Liberation Front, which doodled on a photo of stars Angelina Jolie and Jonny Lee Miller and replaced the sales pitch with a mocking version; the studio kept the altered site up throughout the theatrical run.
- The Cyberdelia nightclub interiors were shot at the disused Brentford Public Baths outside London, where producer Ralph Winter said the pool's historic-landmark designation meant great care had to be taken not to damage anything and to return it to its original state.
- Director Iain Softley avoided CGI for Hackers' cyberspace sequences, using motion control, animation, models and rotoscoping instead, because he felt computer graphics alone could sometimes look flat and sterile.

- The cast spent three weeks getting to know each other and learning to type and rollerblade, and they studied computers and met actual hackers including Tristan Louis, Kevin Mitnick and Nicholas Jarecki.
