Plot summary
Eleanor Webb writes her life story page by page and lets the pages go in the wind. Her mother, Clara, works at a lap-dancing club until a man named Werner, one of the Brethren, drives her out and demands to know where Eleanor is. Clara takes her daughter to a rundown coastal resort, where a lonely man, Noel, has inherited the Byzantium hotel. Clara sets her sights on him and turns the place into a makeshift brothel. Eleanor plays piano in a restaurant, is approached by Frank, an American waiter, and enrolls at the local college, which Frank also attends. Curious about her past, Frank asks questions, and Eleanor writes her story down for him to read.
