Plot summary
In July 1917, Siegfried Sassoon, a decorated officer, publishes an open letter condemning the conduct of the war. His friend and fellow poet Robert Graves helps arrange that the army sends him to Craiglockhart, a psychiatric hospital, rather than court-martialing him. There Dr William Rivers, working as a Freudian psychiatrist, treats officers for shell shock and other trauma, encouraging them to talk about their war memories. Billy Prior, a working-class officer admitted unable to speak, recovers his voice and begins a relationship with Sarah, who works at a factory making munitions. Wilfred Owen, another patient, wants to write poetry and admires Sassoon's verse, so Sassoon agrees to help him with it.
