Biography
Rowan Atkinson is an English actor, comedian, and writer, born in Consett in 1955, who first drew national attention with The Oxford Revue before success on the sketch show Not the Nine O'Clock News. He later played the leads in the sitcoms Blackadder and Mr. Bean, and brought Mr. Bean to the big screen in Bean (1997) and Mr. Bean's Holiday (2007). His film work includes Never Say Never Again (1983), The Witches (1990), Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), The Lion King (1994), in which he voiced Zazu, Rat Race (2001), Scooby-Doo (2002), and Wonka (2023), and he starred in the Johnny English series, among them Johnny English (2003), Johnny English Reborn (2011), and Johnny English Strikes Again (2018). He received British Academy Television Awards in 1981 and 1990, an Olivier Award in 1981, and was appointed CBE in 2013.

First role
Rowan Atkinson gained national attention in August 1976 with The Oxford Revue at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He had already written and performed sketches in Oxford for the Etceteras, the Experimental Theatre Club's revue group, and for the Oxford University Dramatic Society.
Getting ready for a role
Atkinson's Johnny English character was based on Richard Lathum, the hapless and error-prone espionage agent he played in a long-running series of Barclaycard adverts.
