Plot summary
Millie Cantwell manages funds in London and has wanted to sing opera all her life. Just after she is offered a promotion, she quits the job, gives herself a year and leaves her boyfriend Charlie behind for the Scottish Highlands. Patricia Hartley of the London conservatory tells her to approach Meghan Geoffrey-Bishop, a retired diva who coaches singers for the annual Singer of Renown, where a win can mean a place in an opera company. Millie persuades Meghan to hear her by offering a high hourly rate for lessons. Ramsay, who owns the pub The Filthy Pig, rents her a room after she mentions a long stay. Meghan's other pupil is Max Thistlewaite, who pays in work around her cottage and has trained for five years, and he is not pleased to find a rival.
