Plot summary
Sam Bell and Lucy Bell are married and appear to have everything: careers that are going well, good looks, and a busy love life. What they want most is a child, and they have not managed to conceive. They work through a long list of remedies, from chanting and acupuncture to inventive sex, without success, and charts of Lucy's cycle push out any spontaneity. Medical help follows. Meanwhile Sam, who commissions television drama, grows tired of his job and decides to write a screenplay, only to stall. His friend Druscilla, who has hippie convictions, urges him to look inward, and he settles on a comedy built from their attempts to conceive. Lucy is appalled and orders him to keep their story to himself.
