Isobel Elsom

Biography

Isobel Elsom was an English actress whose screen, stage, and television career often placed her in aristocratic or upper-class parts. She was born in Cambridge and attended Howard College in Bedford. Her professional start came in London as a chorus member in The Quaker Girl in 1911, and Gilbert Miller later helped make her a star in The Outsider. Across three decades she acted in 17 Broadway shows, the first being The Ghost Train in 1926, and her best-remembered stage assignment was the rich murder victim in Ladies in Retirement in 1939, a part she took again in the 1941 movie. Silent cinema gave her an early screen foothold, and Owen Nares was a frequent co-star. She acted in close to 100 films, among them The Unseen (1945), The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), Monsieur Verdoux (1947), The Secret Garden (1949), Lust for Life (1956), and My Fair Lady (1964). Television work included Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Dr. Kildare.
