Plot summary
Sigmund Romberg, a Hungarian composer, waits tables at the Café Vienna, a Second Avenue establishment in New York City run by his friend Anna Mueller. The agent Lazar Berrison Sr. arrives, hears Anna sing one of Romberg's songs, and calls the work old-fashioned. Romberg writes an upbeat ragtime song called "Leg of Mutton", which becomes a hit and draws the notice of the Broadway impresario J. J. Shubert. Encouraged by Dorothy Donnelly, Shubert buys a Romberg song, "Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise", to close the first act of a new show starring the French singer Gaby Deslys.
