Hope Emerson
Biography
Hope Emerson was an American actress and a vaudevillian, nightclub performer, and strongwoman. Born in Hawarden in 1897, she began acting at age three in her mother's vaudeville act and later played piano at a 10-cent store to advertise sheet music. Her Broadway debut came in 1930 in Lysistrata. Her performing credits covered stage, radio, film, television, and commercials, and she often played villains in comedies and dramas. Her feature debut was uncredited in Rascals (1938). She played a circus strongwoman in Adam's Rib (1949), a masseuse in Cry of the City (1948), and in Westward the Women (1951) she was a mail-order bride. Her best-known role was Evelyn Harper, a sadistic prison matron in Caged (1950), which earned her a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Academy Awards. She was a panelist on Quizzing the News and played Mother on Peter Gunn, earning an Emmy nomination. She starred on The Dennis O'Keefe Show. She died in 1960.
