Plot summary
Elizabeth Howard arrives at the Fielding house to look after Barney and Ellen, but Barney, still devoted to the family's former governess, Maxine, greets her with hostility. Her room overlooks the shuttered house next door, 11 Crescent Drive, where an old homeless woman was murdered after she saw a light in the basement window; Barney witnessed it from his own window. Elizabeth finds the dead woman's watch in her dressing table. Marian Tygarth, a widow who owns the empty house, returns to sell it. Elizabeth tells David Fielding that someone may be getting into the cellars, but he dismisses her concerns, so she turns to Dr. Evans, a neighbor and friend of the family, for advice.
