Plot summary
Ann Sutton, the wife of Dr. William Sutton, a Los Angeles psychoanalyst, is caught shoplifting a mermaid pin in an upscale department store and faints when apprehended. David Korvo, a hypnotist, persuades the store officials to charge the pin to her account rather than prosecute her, then insists she join him for lunch. She expects blackmail, but he destroys her check and the store's record of the theft and promises to help her. Ashamed of her secret, Ann cannot sleep. At a party with Korvo she meets Theresa Randolph, who was once Korvo's lover and is also a patient of her husband, and Korvo puts Ann into a trance, ordering her to sleep. She agrees to further sessions at his hotel, though she will not go up to his rooms and prefers to talk in the bar.
