Plot summary
Jack Martin sings, dances and does impressions at a nightclub in Monte Carlo. The club holds a gala for Captain Henri Duran, an aviator who has just completed a record-breaking flight around the world and who looks exactly like Jack. Backstage, Jack's partner and girlfriend, Colette, mistakes Duran for him, and he invites her to a reception on Saturday. Duran's associate Philippe brings bad news: Periton, the Air Europa director, keeps delaying his purchase of the company's planes. Duran flies to London to seek help, and Philippe and Louis persuade Jack to play Duran at the reception for half a million francs. They coach him on Duran's noncommittal gesture and comment, and Lili, Duran's wife, is let in on the arrangement.

- On the Riviera ran into trouble with censors, who objected that the last part of the story seemed based on the suspicion of illicit relationships between the characters; the final script was approved anyway, with Lili's confusion over the identity of the man she spent the night with intact.
- Danny Kaye's wife, songwriter and lyricist Sylvia Fine, wrote four pieces for the picture, and one of them, Popo the Puppet, became a signature song for Kaye.
- Gwen Verdon, credited as Gwyneth Verdon, appears in dance sequences choreographed and staged by Jack Cole, and On the Riviera was her first appearance on film.
- The film's Oscar-nominated set decoration includes a portrait of Lili Duran that is the same portrait of Gene Tierney as Laura Hunt created for the 1944 film Laura.
- The Red Cat, the play On the Riviera is based on, was produced for the stage by Darryl Zanuck and ran for only 13 performances, but the studio still got several film adaptations out of it.
