Plot summary
Val McNulty has recently married Maggie, a socialite, and lives in Ohio. His mother, Ellen, has been running a hamburger stand in New Jersey; she closes it and arrives in Ohio for a surprise visit. Maggie takes Ellen for the cook hired to work at her dinner party, and Ellen does not correct her, not wanting to embarrass Maggie. Val urges Ellen to move into his house, and the pretense continues, with Ellen arguing that a mother-in-law at home would only cause friction. Val gives in and lets it stand. Maggie's mother arrives and makes plain her disapproval of Val and of Ellen.
