Plot summary

Born in Manhattan in 1872, Henry Van Cleve is the only child of wealthy, trusting parents and a doting grandmother, though his grandfather Hugo sees him clearly. He grows up idle and fond of showgirls. In a bookstore he approaches a stranger whose telephone conversation he had overheard, passing himself off as a clerk; she is engaged, and she leaves when he admits the pretense. At a family gathering his cousin Albert presents his fiancée, Martha, and her quarreling parents, the Strables, and Henry recognizes her. Martha had accepted Albert, the first suitor her parents approved, to avoid remaining unmarried in Kansas City. Henry persuades her to elope with him, which scandalizes everyone except Grandpa Van Cleve.
