Ruth Clifford
Biography
Ruth Clifford was an American actress who began in silent films as a teenager and worked into the television era. Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, she started as an extra at Universal at 15, and her first film credit came for Behind the Lines (1916). In her twenties she played leads and second leads, notably Ann Rutledge, a role she took in The Dramatic Life of Abraham Lincoln (1924). The coming of sound reduced her roles, and for three decades her parts grew smaller. John Ford used her in eight films, though seldom in substantial roles. She also provided the voices of Disney's Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck, toured with the Abbey Theatre Company in classic Irish plays during the 1940s, and appeared on television programs such as Highway Patrol in the 1950s. The Los Angeles Times, in its obituary, observed that she had become a key resource for people studying silent cinema.
