Plot summary
Eddie Smith and Tommy Gordon, high school sophomores in a Midwestern town, are turned away from a school dance when Tommy is caught without a ticket. Tommy explains that his widowed mother has had no work for months and that he means to drop out and find a job. Eddie says he will ask his father about work at the cement factory, and finds that his father has just lost his job there. Eddie sells his jalopy to the junkyard, but the money does not cover the family's bills for long, and the Smiths are threatened with eviction. With both households in trouble, Eddie and Tommy write notes to their parents and board a freight train for the city, where they meet Sally, a teenager traveling to stay with an aunt in Chicago.

When director William A. Wellman wanted the teens in Wild Boys of the Road sent to prison at the end, producer Jack L. Warner found the ending too harsh and depressing, and against Wellman's advice forced him to film a happy one where the judge dismisses the case.
