Eugenie Besserer
Biography
Eugenie Besserer was a French-American actress who began in silent films and continued into the early sound era, starting in 1910. Her most prominent role was the mother of the title character in The Jazz Singer (1927), the first talkie. Her stage work began with McKee Rankin, and she later appeared alongside performers such as Frank Keenan and Wilton Lackaye; as a young actress she took a juvenile part with Maurice Barrymore. She played a season in Portland, Oregon, at Pike's Opera House, and another season opposite Henry Kolker. Besserer came to Hollywood in 1910, when filmmaking there was in its early days, and became associated with the Selig Polyscope Company. On screen she was usually cast as mothers. She also took the role of Aunt Ray Innis in the 1915 film The Circular Staircase, adapted from Mary Roberts Rinehart's novel. Besserer died in 1934.
