Plot summary
Vladimar Ivan Tsarakov is a puppeteer whose crippled body has kept him from the ballet stage he longs for. He rescues Fedor Ivanoff, a boy who has been abused, takes him as a protégé, and trains him until he becomes the greatest dancer in the world. Fedor grows into a young man in Tsarakov's company and falls in love with Nana Carlova, a ballerina who dances there. Tsarakov is in love with Nana as well. He is afraid that Fedor's feelings for her will cost the young man his dancing, and he sets out to keep the two of them apart.
