Marc McDermott
Biography
Marc McDermott was an Australian performer of stage and screen who, after starting out in amateur theatricals in Sydney, built a long career in American silent films. He was born in Goulburn, New South Wales, and was discovered in 1899 by the stage actor George Rignold, with whose company he toured Australia. He reached New York in 1902, joined Mrs Patrick Campbell's troupe, and played Broadway before spending several years on the English stage. Thomas Edison hired him in 1909 as a featured player at the Bronx studio, and he appeared in Les Misérables and the 1909 short Lochinvar, then took the part of Ebenezer Scrooge in a seventeen-minute A Christmas Carol. He starred in the serial What Happened to Mary? and later The Man Who Disappeared, had appeared in more than 140 Edison films by 1916, and then moved to Vitagraph, where he worked for another decade in roles large and small. He died in 1929.
