Plot summary
Paula Bradford, a wealthy murder mystery writer, has come back from her travels and wants her former husband back. The surgeon Dr. Lawrence Bradford divorced her because she kept pulling him into real murder cases. When the jockey on the favored horse dies mid-race, she is sure it was murder, and she and Mike North, the horse's trainer, talk the unwilling doctor into investigating. Brad is puzzled by traces of gelatin on the corpse. An envelope addressed to North arrives at his home, and a second caller claiming to be North sends Brad to a meeting place without the money. Brad swaps the cash for torn magazine pages, and when he returns to his suite a burglar is searching there. Paula swings a skull at the intruder and knocks out Brad instead.
