Plot summary
A new house in the San Fernando Valley, a stepfather named Bill, and a summer of 1962 to fill: Scotty Smalls wants friends. He asks to join the eight boys who play baseball every day at the neighborhood sandlot, but a clumsy first attempt at fielding makes the others laugh. Benny Rodriguez, the team's leader, invites him onto the team as an outfielder and helps him improve. When Ham knocks a home run into the yard next door, the boys hold Smalls back and tell him about the Beast, the giant mastiff that lives behind Mr. Mertle's fence and has taken every ball hit over it.

- A childhood classmate of writer-director David Mickey Evans sued 20th Century Fox and the film's producers for defamation in 1998 over the character Michael "Squints" Palledorous; the trial court found for the film-makers and the California Court of Appeal affirmed.
- Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg, Richard Donner and Lauren Shuler Donner all tried to buy the rights to the screenplay in 1991, but Island World won them and hired David Mickey Evans to direct his own script.
- The film grossed $4,000,000 in its opening weekend and a further $32,000,000 through ticket sales, but figures for world-wide VHS and DVD sales are estimated at $76,000,000, and it has since become a cult favorite.
